Senator Ted Stevens Understands the Internets Better than You
Topic: Technology

To close out our odd week, we turn to The Daily Show, who have come to some agreement to help get Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens, Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, and his key message about the Internet, or as he calls them, "Internets," out to the general public.

Ted "Series of Tubes" Stevens

For those of you that don't have speakers (you people would get along GREAT with Ted - ed.), we're putting his smartest quotes below.

"The Internet is not something that you just something on.  It's not a big truck, it's a series of tubes."

"And if you don't understand that those tubes can be filled, and if they're filled when you put your message in it, it gets in line, it's gonna be delayed by anyone who puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."

"Ten movies streaming across that, that Internet, and what happens to your own personal Internet?  I... just the other day, got Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday."

Finally, someone like Ted "Series of Tubes" Stevens comes along to give us the perfect understanding of just how important the Internets are and how our own Internet tubes can be clogged with enormous amounts of material.  That cleared everything up.

The Damn Weekly DSCC Email; Patrick Leahy is Mad About Guantanamo
Topic: Politics

This week's DSCC email comes from the one and only mind of Senator Patrick Leahy, who is showing his ire over the Guantanamo prison SNAFU.  So what does the distinguished whiner have to say?  Let's take a look.

Yesterday, the White House reversed its irresponsible detainee policy when it announced that all prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay are protected by U.S. law and the Geneva Conventions.  Of course, it took a Supreme Court rebuke of George Bush's illegal military tribunal system to get even this mild concession. - It's Cuba.  Guantanamo detainees still had more rights than the average Cuban citizen, but unfortunately Leahy is right on the money.

For more than four years, the Bush-Cheney Administration has invited the ire of the world over its treatment of terrorist detainees at Guanatanamo. Our ability to win the hearts and minds of Muslims across the world has been irrevocably damaged. For what? No trials. No convictions. And now we are back to square one.  I am outraged. - You're outraged?  We're outraged that you're trying to win the hearts and minds of Muslims across the world.  These people cut the heads off of our citizens and scream "Death to the USA" from rooftops.  Up your ass, Leahy.  Don't be a dick.

This, from the same people who have desecrated the meaning of the American flag by countenancing torture, illegal detention and illegally spying on our citizens. The same people who have now disbanded the special task force to hunt down Osama bin Laden. - Senator Leahy, did you not support the disbanding of the task force, which was brought to a vote by the Democrats?  You did.  Did you not support the wire tapping of possible terrorist activity in the United States?  You did.  You lose.

No one disputes that we are at war with a ruthless and intractable enemy. But this is America. And in America, we don't judge ourselves by the standards of our enemies. Our behavior is governed by a higher standard, and anything short of that is an assault on the core values on which this country was built. - So your idea to beat a "ruthless and intractable enemy" is to play by a kinder, gentler set of rules?  Our final thought on your email is "you suck, Patrick Leahy."

Heart of Darko Presents "This Week in Irony" Starring Pete Coors
Topic: Stupidity

When we were the tender age of 12, our grandmother gave us a drink from her beer, and our love affair with Coors Light began.  14 years later, we've discovered other liquified forms of the beverage, but we still always find ourselves purchasing a fresh 12 pack of the Silver Bullet every now and then.

And perhaps Pete Coors needs to slow his roll a bit and put the Bullet down.  After being arrested in late May for drunk driving, it appears that the former Senatatorial candidate is heading to court for his DUI.  Now the full story is finally out.

After leaving a wedding reception in Colorado, a state trooper watched as Coors drove his green Jaguar straight through a stop sign and then proceeded to continue to his house.  The trooper administered a breathalizer and the beer empresario was arrested for blowing a .88, barely higher than the .8 maximum allowed.  He was taken into custody and released three hours later after not being formally booked.

For another little bit of included irony, Coors had advocated the lowering of the drinking age to 18 from the current 21, which was met with major oposition from his detractors, who claimed (correctly, it appears - ed.) that he was doing this to simply make more money.

We feel bad for supporting this man, so we're proud to announce that sitting in our fridge is a 12 pack of frosty Miller High Life Lights.  And a pint of Monty Python's Holy Ale.  Yes, we're weird.

Crazed (or Ingenius) Australian Man Creates Flavored Bottled Water for Dogs, French
Topic: Weird Shit

When Andrew Larkey looks into the eyes of your dog, he sees them thirst for more that simply your love.  He sees them thirst for a new product that can either be described as genius or lunacy; Aqua Dog.

With three flavors to entice your dog's pallate, including beef, chicken and bacon, this water is sure to sit well with your pooch (or fat husband - ed.)  But Larkey is promoting it as something different entirely from what it actually is.  He looks at the booming market for bottled war and mass produced beverages for people and created for pets what was lacking; a doggy sports drink.

So now you too can go on a long run with Fido or Muffy and rehydrate them in the same way when you reach for your Gatorade.  Except Gatorade doesn't make a bacon flavored drink yet.  YET.

They Can't Kill Us!
Topic: Housekeeping

Ladies and gents, we apologize for yesterday's ghost town appearance here.  SBC decided that our DSL line should resemble a dial up modem from 1994, so we were unable to log in to our account, check email, look up porn and pretty much do anything.  But no more!  We're back today with a great new DSCC email and probably some other stuff.  So let's get to it...

For Mavs Fans; Jason Terry Re-signing!
Topic: Sports

After the heartbreak of not winning the NBA championship after a tremendously successful season, the first thing the Dallas Mavericks had on their plate was to resign their fantastic point/shooting guard Jason "Jet" Terry, something that they accomplished today.

Jet has resigned for a six year extension worth an estimated $50 million, guaranteeing him $7 million in his first year. This is wonderful news for Mavs fans and ginormous Jet fans (like us - ed.). Also, Dallas draft pick Maurice Ager has come out of the pocket flying, averaging 23 points in the Las Vegas summer league, proving that he's going to be an integral part of the Mavericks organization. Go Mavs!

Hizbollah Screws up BIG TIME
Topic: World News

In the aftermath of a daylight border-crossing raid by Hizbollah guerrillas that left seven Israeli solders dead and two kidnapped, it would appear that the militant Lebanese group has accidentally called down the international thunder, starting with Israeli labeling the raid as an "act of war."

After the raid was over, Israeli soldiers ventured to the site looking for its wounded, dead and missing soldiers, and were promptly attacked again, resulting in more causalities. Now the US has begun to spread the blame around, saying that Syria and Iran had a direct hand in the attacks. And boy are the Israelis PISSED.

"It is an act of war by the state of Lebanon against the state of Israel in its sovereign territory," Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said of Hizbollah's action, threatening a "very painful" response.

Great. Now we can just sit back and wait for the fireworks to begin and international assistance to be called upon. Thank goodness we only have to worry about crackheads and carjackers. They can't shoot straight anyway thanks to the drugs.

France's Zidane Speaks out About World Cup Head Butt; Entire Country Should Take Notes
Topic: Sports

France's legendary footballer Zenidine Zidane spoke out about his expulsion from the World Cup Soccer Finals match for head butting Italy's Marco Materazzi late in the second overtime. As expected, he did not mention exactly what was said, but noted that it was comments about his sister and mother that set him off, something that Materazzi vehemently denied saying. Then again, MM also said he didn't know what an Islamic terrorist is, so it's kind of hard to believe him and his track record of thuggery over a fantastic player like Zidane.

Zidane did not specify exactly what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said that enraged him, but that it was insulting to his sister and mother.

"I would rather have taken a punch in the jaw than have heard that," Zidane said, stressing that Materazzi's language was "very harsh."

Materazzi made the mistake of speaking to Zidane in Italian, which he happens to speak. After the incident, teams and countries from around the world hired lip readers to see what exactly was said, and all came to the conclusion that he made derogatory comments about his Algerian mother, calling Zidane the son of a terrorist whore.

But it was one of Zidane's comments that should be looked at by the entire French government. Instead of caving to lazy teenagers who don't want to work, as they did in recent months, they should heed his words:

The France captain said he felt no regret for his act, "because that would mean (Materazzi) was right to say all that."

Now this is a man who just happens to be French. He's not a Frenchman. Listen up France. You should be more like Zidane you pansies.

When Human Rights Petitioners go too Far...
Topic: Weird Shit

While we're not fans of the ACLU, we believe that there is a need for them every now and then throughout our history. However, the case we are going to be describing in a moment is one of those where human rights suits went way too far and have become a parody of themselves.

The country is Germany will be forced to pay restitution to a Sierra Leone man who was forced to upchuck a baggie of cocaine after he was arrested for selling drugs. The man sued for suffering "inhuman and degrading treatment."

This is why drug laws are not strong enough throughout the world. The doctor who inserted the tube through the man's nose and filled his stomach with the solution that made him vomit the baggie was using a medical procedure instead of simply taking a ball point pen and ramming it down the guy's throat, which would have been easier and more cost effective. Sometimes we've done that just so that we could drink more in one night, so how is that degrading?

Pink Floyd Founder Syd Barrett Taken Away to Magical Land of LSD at Age 60
Topic: Entertainment

Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett, who famously left the band, being replaced by David Gilmour before the band's massive hit "Dark Side of the Moon," died a few days ago of unknown complications. He had been a diabetic for years.

Barrett had a history of mental illness that was heightened by his massive acid use, and spent the last couple of decades as a recluse. He will be missed throughout the rock and roll community, whom he influenced greatly in his singing, song-writing and guitar style. Rest in peace Syd Barrett. We hear God's got some pretty good stuff for you to try.

Smugglers Continuing to Attempt to Ship One Peso Coins to Melt Down
Topic: Weird Shit

The Mexican currency has never been valued at a very high level. When we went to Tijuana at a young age, it was somewhere in the $1US equals some odd hundreds of pesos. Now it's roughly 52.20 pesos per dollar. So why are smugglers so interested in shipping the one peso coins overseas? Because the older coins contain high amounts of copper and nickel, making each coin worth about 3.50 pesos each, thus meaning a tidy profit.

Even though this is the oddest smuggling ring in the world, considering that the only reason these criminals are being caught is because they're failing to say what they're shipping. It's not illegal to ship money; just more expensive.

Kinky Friedman Can Use "Kinky" on Gubernatorial Ballot; Other Chick Can't Use "Grandma"
Topic: Texas Politics

Maverick candidate for Texas Governor Kinky Friedman has won yet another battle to get his victory, as he will be listed as Richard "Kinky" Friedman on the November ballot. His other independent opponent, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, will not, however, be allowed to use the nickname "Grandma" on hers, even though we didn't even know anyone called her this.

So now that it's official, it's just a matter of time before the two Democrats split votes, people throw trash and old vegetables at current governor Rick Perry, "Grandma" breaks her hip and Kinky wins it all. Should be an interesting train wreck of some campaigning in the coming months. Bully for that.

Finally, Something to be Proud of; Texas Schools First to Ban "Grillz"
Topic: Texas News

Three Dallas area school districts have become the first to ban the wearing of idiotic "grillz" in the mouths of their students. These stupid pieces of "jewelry" go over the teeth and are made to be pretty much just a shiny way to make you talk like you have a mouthful of shit.

"The district is having to respond to fads because they've become distracters or a safety hazard for those around them," said Arlington ISD Malcolm Turner, the district's executive director of student services.

Grand Prairie and DeSoto have also banned the moronic mouthpieces. Perhaps this will finally show parents just how dumb their kids can be, so this stupidity doesn't keep happening. No one cares if you look like Jaws from the James Bond movies!

Parkland Memorial Hospital to Charge Mexico for Illegals Treatment; Needs More Bleach to Cover the Wretched Smell
Topic: Texas News

Parkland Memorial Hospital is the type of medical facility that we would not step foot in. This is not because the medical staff is incompetent (Parkland is notorious for having some of the best staff in the nation - ed.), or because it's in a bad location (which it is), but because of its overpowering smell, which seems to be a combination of urine and week old semen.

Now, Parkland officials are apparently out of bleach and are looking to bill the country of Mexico for all of the extended medical service they give to the illegal immigrants that frequent their emergency room. If you ask us, however, sending a bill to Mexico is like dialing the operator on your phone and asking to speak to Korea.

Officials are stating that they don't think they'll get the money, but they might as well try. And even if this is a colossal failure, they could possibly eke some extra money out of the federal government so they can buy some more bleach and cover up the motherfucking stench. Bleh.

Pygmies Have Infected Our Computer

Honestly we aren't even sure if this message will make it out, but the pygmies that have long been held at bay by our server's spinning fan have managed to wedge a tiny pebble inside of it, thus halting it from its security duties and allowing them to run amok on our site.

Only one of the five posts we have attempted to make today have made it online, so until we are able to stab every little one of these little buggers with fondue forks, we're going to be down. It's not a ten count, but it's nearing a standing eight, so we better get on it.

Entourage's Biggest Fake Opening of All Time Can't Beat Johnny Depp
Topic: Entertainment

Much was made in the first two episodes of the third season of Entourage about James Cameron's Aquaman beating Spiderman as the biggest opening ever by raking in $116 million. So much for that fantasy. Now, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 absolutely crushed this by hauling in a massive $132 million, making Johnny Depp the biggest drunken, odd, careening movie star on the planet, meaning no one will ever call him Edward Scissorhands again.

Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow also beat the crap out of the Man of Steel, as Superman's total take so far only has hit $147 million, despite costing $200 million to make. Yep. Paramount wet themselves this morning.

We're fans of any event that can bring the entire world together and that you can bet on using Internet casinos, so of course the 2006 World Cup has done this for us. Today's finals match between France and Italy is currently in halftime, with the score tied 1-1 after an early penalty kick by French legend Zidane to start it off and then Italy returning the favor with a tremendous header to knot it up.

45+ minutes of soccer left, and this might be a very high scoring game, since both teams have the explosive ability. Watch it on ABC or keep tabs below!

NBA Player Eddie Griffin Charged with Driving While Jerking Off and Watching Porn and Being Drunk
Topic: Sports

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Eddie Griffin is in a lot of trouble for his DUI car accident last month, during which time he was thought to have been masturbating while driving intoxicated to his home. Griffin smashed into three cars before lurching to a stop, penis in drunken hand. We turn to Deadspin now, who has the full lawsuit linked on their page and the best excerpt quoted for those of you in a hurry.

Defendant Griffin was under the influence of alcohol and negligently not paying attention to the direction of travel ahead of him due in part to the fact he was watching a pornographic DVD which was displayed on a mounted in-dash DVD player, located near the steering column, in his Escalade video. He was manually manipulating his genitals which he described to a witness, after the accident, as “jacking off.” DVD jackets with pornographic titles “Anal Action” and “Privates” were seen in the driver/passenger area of the vehicle. The items were viewed by the officers at the scene, whereupon they laughed.

It might come back to bite them in the ass, but the officers on the scene laughing part was our favorite, and we laughed when we read that. Way to go Eddie. You're dumb.

The Damn Weekly DSCC Email; Only Chuck Schumer Can Stop Evil
Topic: Politics

This week's Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee email comes from that quasi-lovable madman from New York state, Senator Chuck Schumer. Chucky's pretty happy that people gave the DSCC $1.2 million in the past month (dude, that's pretty week for a nationwide fund raiser, isn't it? - ed.), so he's going to tell you exactly what HE's going to do with your money.

He and the other Democratic Senators are going to turn into Super Senators and have a cage match with Bush, because only they can stop his world domination plot.

Senate Democrats are the only people standing in the way of Bush's radical agenda. - Seriously Chuck? The House Democrats suck that much? Shhh. Nancy Pelosi might've heard you. Hide in your closet.

In the run-up to the November elections, you can count on Republicans doing everything to divert and distract from their disastrous legislative record. They'll attack the media. They'll revel in their fake tough guy patriotism. But this time, America won't be fooled. - The Democrats however, will do none of this. Instead, they will be standing on top of tall buildings in tights, capes flying in the wind, waiting for a kitten to get stuck in a tree, because Democrats love kittens. And puppies. And full grown cats and dogs because they tend to pander.

This was a worthless, disappointing email that only lasted two paragraphs and said nothing of importance except that, surprise, Democrats think George W. Bush sucks. You know what Chuck? You suck. Never email us again with this boring shit.

A Few More Reasons Why Cingular Sucks
Topic: Technology

As former Verizon wireless and current Sprint PCS fans, we've never been big on Cingular. We think they're overpriced and don't care about their customers, only using their "cool new phones" to draw people in. Looks like we were righter than we could've guessed.

Now the company faces a multi-million dollar class action lawsuit on behalf of former AT&T wireless customers who after the October 2004 merger with Cingular were promised no degradation of service. Turns out that Cingular couldn't care less, and did not keep up or update the AT&T wireless facilities, and customers not only began to receive more dropped calls and areas of no service, but were treated as second class customers.

The federal suit alleges that Cingular forced AT&T customers to cancel their AT&T contracts for $175 before they were able to change service, and that they stopped offering new phones and updates plans for AT&T customers, forcing them to change to their service.

This comes one month after Cingular lost a $12.5 million judgment for signing up customers faster than they could get them cell phone service and would also have to pay $10 million to customers who canceled their contracts after being forced to by Cingular. This gives us even more cause to say with 100 percent conviction that Cingular sucks.
